The Story

Welcome to Source To Sea !

At the present moment a brand new idea is underway that is intended to engage all communities and all users of the River Lee from Gougaunne Barra right to the mouth of Cork Harbour.

Based on the idea of a ‘relay’ Source To Sea is similar in concept to the Olympic Torch journey. In place of the “torch” we propose to take a vessel of water from the source of our river and carry, care for and celebrate it all the way to the sea.

The idea has been warmly welcomed by the Cork Harbour Festival team and we plan to coincide the arrival of the Source To Sea relay with this year’s festival (2-10 June 2018).

The final leg of the Source to Sea journey will take place on Sunday 10th of June, the last day of Cork Harbour Festival.

The Lee is steeped in history and lore and we wish to invite one and all to participate and share in the celebration of her secrets.

With the modern pace of life and modern technologies we have become removed from our natural resources. Generally we tend to focus on our own interests and miss out on what is happening down the road or the river for that matter.

The Source To Sea project idea invites clubs and communities to carry a pure drop of the River Lee (Deoch An Loai)  in a specially crafted vessel (please see the short film on this site entitled ‘The Goblet’) and organize their very own event to celebrate it before it is passed on to the next carrier.

The event could be a local stream clean-up or a film screening , exhibition of old photographs, a gathering with stories music and song, connected with your club or community.  All events and carrier ideas will be documented on this the dedicated website and all the popular media platforms.

This of course creates a wonderful free forum to inform the public about our river by those who still have the deep connection to our rivers, our streams and our oceans.

On this site everyone can follow the ideas that different communities propose to organise in terms of transporting the vessel and celebrating it in their own unique way. All events will be open to the wider public as this is the core concept.

Celebrate your knowledge from the source to the sea.
